How do I sign up to volunteer at Habitat?

Click on the VolunteerUP button to the left and register yourself as a volunteer (or login if you are a returning volunteer). Once you are registered, our calendar will show any opportunities available. Please feel free to sign up for any opportunities you might enjoy!

As a general note, volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to volunteer with our organization (18 or older to volunteer at our ReStore). If an individual is either 16 or 17 years of age, she/he must have a guardian signature on the waiver prior to volunteering (available when signing up for a volunteer date) .

Volunteer Opportunities

Construction:
We build on Saturday morning from 8am – 12noon. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to work at the construction site (with a guardian signature). No construction experience necessary! If you are an individual, sign up online to assure space is still available to volunteer at the construction site. If you would like to schedule a group or sponsor a build, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator directly.

Note about weather: Inclement weather commonly occurs in McLean County. Volatile weather can exist any time of the year, and as such, contingencies must be made to deal with such events. Safety is always our first priority. The decision to call off construction is a very important one and is made only after thorough consideration. If the weather looks questionable for construction the morning of your workday, please tune in to WJBC (93.7 FM/1230 AM). If construction is going to be cancelled, we will inform WJBC by 7am. We will also try to post a notice on our website (www.habitatmclean.org) and on our Facebook page. Please note that outdoor work is dependent on the weather. We will not work/build if the temperature is under 25 degrees or over 95 degrees with the heat index. If it is snowing, raining or thundering and lightning, the build will be cancelled. If the weather becomes hazardous during the build shift, we will suspend building activities for safety reasons. Once a home is closed in and heated, indoor work will continue rain or shine. In all cases, please use your personal discretion to determine if it is safe for you to leave your home and travel to the build site. Weather-related issues and other unforeseen factors beyond our control occasionally require us to change a scheduled volunteering date. We only cancel/reschedule when we are absolutely compelled to do so, and we appreciate your understanding and flexibility if this occurs.

Retired Crew:
Our Retired Crew is an important part of Habitat’s housing ministry. Each Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8am – 12noon a group of dedicated volunteers meets to help in the construction of Habitat’s new homes or work on homes that are in need of critical repair. All volunteers are welcome, and there is no need to sign up! For more information, please visit the Retired Crew section of our website by clicking here.

Women Build:
Every year we have a home that is build by an all Women crew! The group builds every Tuesday evening from 4pm – 8pm and again every Saturday morning from 8am – 12noon. This is a volunteer opportunity you must sign up for ahead of time (you can do so by clicking on the Volunteer UP icon at the top of this page). To learn more about this group, please visit the Women Build site by clicking here.

Administrative Help:
We are always seeking volunteers at our admin office who can help on a weekly basis. Tasks include answering the telephone, data entry, copying, assisting with mailing, etc. Contact Lindsey, Volunteer Coordinator, at the number above if you are interested in joining our staff in the office.

Misc. Ways to Help:
Individuals who volunteer for Habitat (or have an interest to do so) are full of talent! If there is something you enjoy doing (for example, baking, delivering treats to our volunteers, helping to stock sheds, scrapbooking, etc.), we can more than likely use your help. If you, personally, have something you enjoy doing and think it could benefit Habitat, please contact Lindsey, Volunteer Coordinator, at the number/e-mail above.
